Council Prayers

It might interest Ron Thomson (“Commonwealth calls on divine” letters 9/11) to know that our constitution doesn’t mention Almighty God at all. The preamble is no more part of the constitution than a foreword is part of a novel. It has no legal status of it’s own.

He asks “If it is good enough for the Commonwealth, why should it not be good enough for Port Stephens Council?”, entirely missing the point that it is not appropriate for either the parliament or the local council to pray to Jesus when 40% of the population aren’t even Christian.

The fact that our parliament prays for wisdom every day should be evidence enough that prayer obviously doesn’t work.

Those attending the Port Stephens Mayoral Prayer Breakfast on the 30th this month might like to consider that two hands working achieves more than a thousand clasped in prayer.
