I am writing to the citizens of Kentucky from the other side of the world, to express my dismay at the proposed state support of expatriate Aussie Ken Ham’s Ark Encounter project. While I have been following the ongoing debate over whether sales-tax breaks amount to government funding for a religious theme park, I am left wondering how any Kentuckian can possibly think it appropriate that a project that is being supported by the state can be allowed to discriminate when hiring employees based on religious belief and sexual orientation.
Answers in Genesis have made the claim that the project will benefit all Kentuckians and will employ many thousands of people. The statement of faith that is required to be signed by all employees belies the true nature of this claim.
My humble advice to the legislators in Kentucky, is to consider the effects of this project on the reputation of Kentucky and the USA. The world is watching closely, with trepidation and bewilderment, as the USA further alienates itself from the rest of the world by rejecting evolution and discriminating against non-believers and gay people.
